Easily recognised by all, giant beans are (as their name suggests,) larger than flat "megalosperma" beans. Giant beans are white and round, with a subtle kidney shape. Their exceptional quality, unique taste, fast-cookability and plain good looks – along with other varieties – are due to Prespes' nutrient-rich soil composition and unique microclimate.
The seeds are of local origin and are traditionally cultivated.
From 1994 to 2009 these beans were certified a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) product and since 28 May 2009 they have become a PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) product.
