What PDO and PGI products are

In 1992, with Regulation 2081, the European Union introduced for the first time a regime for the Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) for agricultural products.

The above Regulation has enabled farmers, first to turn to forms of integrated rural development with diversified agricultural production, and also to promote their products more easily. This regulation ensures that consumers can buy specific quality products with guarantees for the production method and geographical origin.

Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) means the name of a region, a specific place or, in exceptional cases a country, used to describe an agricultural product originating in that region, specific place or country, of which the quality or characteristics essentially or exclusively belong to that geographical environment, including natural and human factors, and the production, processing and preparation take place within that defined geographical area.
Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) mean the name of a region, a specific place or, in exceptional cases a country, used to describe an agricultural product originating within that region, specific place or country, which has a specific quality, reputation or other characteristic property, attributable to its geographical origin, and whose production, processing or preparation takes place within the determined geographical area.
